Top 1000 voting closes after more than half a million votes

Voting for the Top 1000 has officially closed. Between 2 September and 1 November, football fans cast a total of 501,992 votes for 5,449 different players. This means that more than two-thirds of all players from 70 years of Eredivisie history received at least one vote. The Top 1000 is an initiative of Eredivisie CV and ESPN.

To celebrate 70 years of the Eredivisie, fans were invited to create their own rankings of players who have featured in the competition since 1956. Each participant selected between five and 25 favourites from a pool of more than 8,000 players. The final Top 1000 ranking will be revealed during the Christmas holidays on ESPN, across ten daily studio shows.

Most Votes from Rotterdam

Over the past 70 years, a total of 8,009 different players have featured in the Eredivisie. Of those, 70% (5,449 players) received at least one vote, while 1,193 players appeared on exactly one fan's list.

The highest share of votes came from South Holland (18%), followed by North Brabant (17%) and North Holland (12%). Zeeland and Flevoland had the lowest representation. At city level, Rotterdam accounted for the most votes, followed by Amsterdam, Tilburg, The Hague and Groningen.

Forwards the Most Popular

Participants in the vote were 38 years old on average. Players from the 2000s were selected most frequently, followed by those from the 2010s and the 1990s.

Forwards proved the most popular, receiving 45% of all votes. Midfielders followed with 28%, defenders with 20% and goalkeepers with 7%.

Of all votes cast, 67% went to Dutch players. Among foreign players, Brazilians received the most votes, followed by Danes and Swedes.

Top 1000 to be revealed in late December

The final ranking will be determined by combining the public vote with the assessments of an expert jury. Led by jury chairman Hugo Borst, journalists, former players, football experts and other prominent figures will consider the same question: which players deserve a place in the all-time Top 1000?

The final ranking will be unveiled in late December. From 21 to 31 December, ESPN will broadcast ten daily studio shows, gradually revealing the Top 1000.

Jan Joost van Gangelen will be the regular presenter of the shows, while Fresia Cousiño Arias will join clubs, supporters and former players to uncover the stories behind the players on the list. The video series is produced by The Media Brothers.
