Tyrone Owusu earns Telstar their first Player of the Month award
Tyrone Owusu has been named Player of the Month in the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie. The Telstar midfielder scored five goals in October and found the net in four consecutive league matches. Owusu was particularly impressive from distance, with four of his five goals coming from outside the penalty area. He is the first Telstar player ever to win the monthly award.
Five goals in four matches
Telstar drew with ADO Den Haag (2-2) in October, lost to Feyenoord (3-4) and Go Ahead Eagles (3-2), and beat FC Utrecht (4-2). Owusu scored in all four matches.
Against ADO Den Haag, he scored twice against his former youth club. The midfielder also found the net against Feyenoord, Go Ahead Eagles and FC Utrecht.
With five goals, Owusu was the top scorer in October. He also became only the second Telstar player to score in four consecutive league matches. Co Stout was the only player to have achieved that before him, almost fifty years ago, in 1977.
Remarkably, Owusu scored as many goals in these four matches as he had in his first 56 league appearances for Telstar.

Long shots as a weapon
The most striking aspect of Owusu’s goalscoring was the way he found the net. Four of his five goals came from outside the penalty area. He needed just nine attempts to score those four goals, giving him a conversion rate of 44%.
That means Owusu scored almost as many goals from outside the box in a single month as the leading players in that category managed across the entire previous season. Joey Veerman finished 2025/’26 with five long-range goals, while Mika Godts scored four.
Owusu also made a strong contribution for Telstar beyond his goals. Since 1 October, he has created twelve chances from open play, more than any of his teammates. He also provided one assist.
Owusu completed 102 passes in the final third, again the highest total in the squad. With thirteen touches in the opposition penalty area, he was also among Telstar’s most active players around the opponents’ goal. Finally, the midfielder contested 38 duels, winning seventeen of them.
Historic monthly award
For Tyrone Owusu, this is his first Player of the Month award in the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie. His selection also marks a piece of club history, as no Telstar player had ever won the monthly award before.
Owusu succeeds Anis Hadj Moussa, who won the award in September after scoring four goals in two matches.
About the award selection
The Player of the Month and Johan Cruijff Talent of the Month awards are based on more than sixty Opta statistics. These are divided into different categories and weighted according to position. Players can also receive a bonus based on the assessment of an expert jury made up of former players.
These statistics also play a role in the selection of the Player of the Year and Johan Cruijff Talent of the Year. Both awards are presented at the end of the season during the Eredivisie Awards.
